Restocking the box

I'm in the process of restocking my fly boxes. I'm starting with winterish flies and working toward warmwater stuff. Thread midges (upper photo) and scuds (lower photo) were on the menu today. Not the most glamorous flies, but you'd better have them on spring creeks-any season, but especially winter. The white square is 1.25 X1.5 inches for scale.

  1. Orange scuds! You might as well just use powerbait...
I find it interesting that you tie 4 of each kind of fly. I have a conversation with myself each time I tie where I try and decide exactly how many of each fly to make, and I also always end up at 4. Why this magic number? I think it's because 4 flies is just about the number you would need for two productive days before needing to re-tie. Having just enough flies for one day always makes me feel nervous, but there is a sense of security in a two day supply.
